Sadio Mane suffers hamstring injury and could miss six weeks in major blow for Liverpool

Liverpool have been dealt a huge blow just days before the visit of arch-rivals Manchester United after Sadio Mane was ruled out for six weeks with a hamstring injury.

The pacy forward was injured on international duty with Senegal and his absence could not have come at a worse time as manager Jurgen Klopp looks to get their season back on track after an indifferent September.

“The winger was substituted 89 minutes into Senegal’s 2-0 World Cup qualifying win over the Cape Verde Islands on Saturday,” said a Liverpool statement.

“And it has now been confirmed that he picked up an injury during that fixture that could keep him out of action for up to six weeks.”

Mane, who scored 13 Premier League goals last season despite missing the whole of January due to the African Nations Cup and the final six weeks of the campaign with a knee injury, has three in four league matches so far.

The 25-year-old has endured a difficult last six months after a brilliant start to his Anfield career.

He tore the meniscus in a knee during April’s Merseyside derby which prematurely ended his season and required surgery.

Having worked hard in pre-season to get back to fitness the forward began the campaign with three goals in his first four appearances before a red card at Manchester City on September 9 resulted in a three-match ban and halted his progress.

Since his debut in August 2016 Liverpool average 2.2 Premier League goals with Mane in the team, compared to 1.6 goals in his absence.

When he went to the African Nations Cup in January, Liverpool won just once in seven matches in all competitions.

They coped better when his knee injury ruled him out in early April, with five wins, two draws and a defeat and the arrivals of Mohamed Salah and Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain were supposed to add more depth to their attacking options and lessen the blow of losing him again.

Salah has scored six in 11 games this season, making him the club’s leading scorer, but Oxlade-Chamberlain’s chances have been few and far between having joined on deadline day.

If any of you guys want to laugh goto @ifl liverpool and check the sadio mane video, it is one of the funniest things ive seen for years. 😂😂😂

  • Delhi Belhi

Please jurgen, no firmino on the wing shite please. Move coutinho to front 3 and make the midfield 3 of hendo gini and can compact.

    • Brighton Red

that midfield is our worst possible combination ~ absolutely zero creativity as we’ve seen time and again in the past.

      • Delhi Belhi

It canbe pretty solid though. It’s all about keeping a clean sheet, hope one of the front 3 can do the business.

        • Brighton Red

I agree we need a clean sheet tops at the weekend, I’ve said elsewhere what I’d consider but it would mean Klopp adopting a more cautious approach ( for one game only ) I’d think about 3-2-4-1 Gomez, Matip and Lovren at the back with Milner and Henderson sitting in front and a midfield of Robertson, Coutinho, Firmino and TAA with Salah in attack. Say to the back 5 you don’t cross the half way line, put Firmino on Mykhitarian to cut off the supply to Lukaku and have Coutinho use the width of the wing backs and pace of Salah to try and score but the clean sheet is paramount.

          • Delhi Belhi

Don’t think our cb’s are particularly suited to 3 atb. Also klopp said he doesn’t like to play systems that he has not practised properly with the team first. I doubt he’ll go 3 atb suddenly for such a big game. Let’s see

          • Brighton Red

think Gomez and Matip would be ok, as I said it’s what I’d consider, I don’t think for a moment that Klopp would go like that ~ but I reckon it would throw Jose if he did !!

  • Jason Patel

Thank fuck we signed Salah and to a lesser extent Chambo. Thanks for fucking us over again “the international break”.

  • Brighton Red

Jesus effin Christ give us a soddin break ffs ~ I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again ~ we should have a clause in our contracts where players agree to make themselves unavailable for international football, how can we ever get anywhere if half the time our players are missing for half a season because of injuries picked up in meaningless fucking internationals ~ I’d like to knife the bastards at FIFA for fucking us up yet again.

    • Delhi Belhi

These were not meaningless internationals though, world cup qualifiers.

      • Brighton Red

all internationals are meaningless, players want to play CL football, how can we get the CL football our players say they want if they are continually unavailable for selection because of injuries picked up in these sodding international matches.

        • Delhi Belhi

Players want to play in the wc as well mate. I think it’s just a bit of bad luck, nothing much. By your logic, senegal fans could say we have no chance of winning the cl so what’s the point? Personally, i liked this intnl break. So many exciting games, the conmebol wc qualifying was too good.

          • Brighton Red

‘ just a bit of bad luck, ‘

trouble is it’s been going on for years now and is getting to the point where it regularly sabotages our season. I’d still want a clause and say to players well do you want to play for a top European side regularly in contention for top 4 cups and titles and be well paid or go somewhere else and play 4 or 5 times a year for your country ~ it’s about time we sorted this at our club ~ I bet if we did the others wouldn’t be far behind.
International football was ok a few years ago but now it is a boring artificial money making machine for FIFA and I’m pig sick of it fucking us up season after season.

  • Stromdiddily

    What in the fuck

    • SuarezSticksIt2U_Again

      Fuck the what

      • Stromdiddily

        The what fuck

  • Rithwik Rajendran

Mane or no Mane… We’re gonna beat the Scums anyway….. 2-0 oh 2-0….. This is the perfect chance for Chambo to show why Klopp bought him…..

  • Quicky Zebra

Luckily we’ve learnt from our mistake from last season and sort out our depth issue… oh wait….. we’re still dependent on Mane… I really really would take a 1 nil win this weekend.. Was at a wedding last weekend and had to sit through listening to an uncle boasting about how the scums are going to take apart our defense like City did..

  • MentalAndBookmarked

what the fuck, playing him for the entire game vs Cape fucking verde, when you’re winning 2 – nil? Just fuck off right now. fuck these international managers.

Mind you I wasn’t too upset that england played kane and alli for the entire lithuania game.

  • RedNeve

I’m really fearful now fellas. What with Firms suffering a bit, Studge still seemingly some what off the pace, Lallana still out, our midfield being a bit hit n miss and now, Mane out it doesn’t bode well.
I just hope Couts and Salah can do some damage.

    • gegenpressing

Considering how optimistic most of us were during the last international break (after we beat Arsenal 4-0), maybe this isn’t such a bad position to be in. Having less expectations might allow us to be positively surprised if things go well. With or without Mane, the team will be up for a game against United (it’s the subsequent games that are worrying for me) and Mourinho is quite capable of making it a drab affair even with Mane in the side.

  • gegenpressing

The reason we were sold that having our style of attack the way we do (besides being effective) was that injury to an important player (even our best one) shouldn’t have quite the same effect it does to other teams who only have one main guy up front…Now is the time to show that…Mane is our best player and we know that we will miss him but we should still be able to achieve our aims without him in the side (maybe without as much “flair”)…This is the reason why we have been building a suitable bench (Sturridge, Solanke, AOC, Milner, Gini/Can, Lallana) and even though none of those guys have really shone this season, hope that they will step up to the plate rather than feel sorry for themselves…Injuries will happen to every team- what determines those that are successful is the ability to cope with them..Let’s do this reds…YNWA

  • Riiseandshine

    Un-fucking-real

    • globalcockup

      Should we recall Origi?

      • Riiseandshine

        To help United more?

  • A huge setback for sure, but it cannot be an excuse for anything. Mane was suspended for three games and then came back and played poorly vs Newcastle. Coutinho will need to play there, and perhaps this would be a good moment for Milner to get in.

    • jolive

In that case we will need 3 goals in the first half coz he’ll be hooked for Ox on 60mins, as sure as night follows day. Problem is that we shouldn’t even be relying on the little snake when he’ll be gone next year, the home crowd is our best hope.

      • gegenpressing

He’s one of our best players..What’s the point of keeping him if we can’t rely on him (whether he’ll be gone or not)? Might be a chance for AOC to gain some confidence by a decent run of games (can’t be easy coming in for 10 or 15 mins each week to get any consistency and I doubt he’s as shit as people have made out)

      • Let’s see about that. I won’t be surprised if FSG stand firm again. His contract situation won’t be much different next summer than it was two months ago. Anyway, we should worry about next season right now. We need a quick fix and a few good results right now.

    • gegenpressing

There seem to be a few options to try and we have had some practice without Mane towards the tail end of last season…4-4-2 with Sturridge/Solanke pairing up with Firmino is certainly an option…We could also get AOC to swap in a like for like (even though less effective)…I’d be willing to try everything except moving Firmino out wide to accommodate someone in the centre. Lallana coming back will also make it easier if we want to move Coutinho and Milner can get more game time….On the positive note, Mane should be back rested for the busy Christmas period (hopefully after we have qualified for CL 2nd round)

      • Though Lallana won’t be back for another month apparently.

      • Jason Patel

Firmino is not bad from the left, as long as he’s not on the right. I suspect Klopp will go for Coutinho wide left though, but this likely raises the dilemma of picking 2 midfielders from Milly, Emre, Gini and Chambo.
        Personally I’d go
        Studge
        Coutinho Firmino Salah
        Milly Hendo

  • Stan Dinaround

Shit is falling all over Klopp’s plans…Poor fucker is gonna get some serious shit when we limp to a loss against the scumtards.

    • jolive

The microscope is on him definitely, hopefully it will help. Unfortunately it’s self inflicted though, Kent would’ve sucked off his own grandpa to play against the scum and the press wouldn’t have been jumping on it.

      • gegenpressing

You think Kent would have got a game ahead of AOC?

        • jolive

there is something to be said for being a specialist, even if he’s 19, Ox hasn’t even had enough time to work out what Klopp wants form him yet

  • nico250gto

At least we have an excuse when we lose.

  • Kloppmeister

Like seriously WTF, c’mon we need a break (and not the international kind)

    • jolive

at least they couldn’t break Lallana

  • Kloppmeister

Man wtf, can there ever be a period of peace, tranquility and things fucking going right? WTF damn pissed off.

  • globalcockup

paging Harry Wilson..Klopp too stubborn to do that

    • jolive

yep, instead it will be cunt on the left for 60mins and replaced by Ox as usual

  • RobbieTheReindeer

    Play woodburn pleeeeease

  • Cuntinho

Fucked, what a price to pay for a game with Cape Verde

  • Saravana Kumar

    What the fuck!

  • It will be fine. Ox will step up…

    • herrdoktorprofessor

so you’re saying we’re completely fucked

  • jolive

Was having such a good day and now i’m fucking seething. Scum game is still a must win though due to our average performances lately, so there can be absolutely no excuses.

    • RedNeve

      None whatsoever

    • Stan Dinaround

But Dave just sold our training kits while the boys were away to pay Countiho a please stay bonus…Just saying, without tracksuits… You Wha! you friggin wha!

    • Vivek Bharos

not for me. heard a lot of bad things this day and this is just adding to it. Oh mane get well soon fella.

  • RedNeve

Well, that puts a tin hat on it.
    We’re fucked

    • jolive

The question is, would any other of the top 6 be so devastated. Klopp knows the press have the knives out now, so the word luck won’t be an accepted.

      • RedNeve

I honestly think that being so thrifty in the last several windows will be our undoing here.
