Liverpool Handed Major Double Injury Boost Ahead Of Chelsea Showdown

Liverpool have been handed a major double injury boost ahead of their huge Premier League clash with Chelsea at Stamford Bridge on Friday night

Can has endured a frustrating season so far as he’s played just 20 minutes of Premier League football after suffering an ankle ligament injury during the 5-0 League Cup win over Burton Albion last month.

The German international subsequently missed the draw against Tottenham at White Hart Lane before the international break and was once again unavailable for Saturday’s impressive victory over Leicester City at Anfield.

However, it looks as though the midfielder is closing in on making his comeback as theLiverpool Echo claim that Can is now expected to return to full training with the rest of the Reds squad at Melwood today.

The 22-year-old will be closely assessed by the Liverpool medical team over the coming days but as long as he doesn’t suffer any setbacks, the newspaper suggests that Can should be in contention to face Chelsea on Friday night.

In a double boost, the Echo also claim that Lovren could be available for selection after missing the win over the defending champions at the weekend with a nasty eye injury which he suffered in training last Friday.

However, Liverpool confirmed the Croatian international didn’t suffer concussion in the incident and with the swelling subsiding, Lovren should also be available for selection for the trip to Stamford Bridge later this week.

The 27-year-old’s availability will be a huge boost to Jurgen Klopp as Lucas Leiva was forced to fill-in at the back against Leicester and it was his error that led to the visitors only goal during the 4-1 win.

  1. I think Can will come on as a sub, he needs to build up his game fitness, the questions is more to pick Coutinho or not to pick Coutinho. Lovren will probably slot straight back in though

  2. Hey what happened to Origi ? He fit?

Don’t know but I have that presentiment that klopp might start Origi.

  3. I will be interested to see the starting lineup. Personally I don’t like Firmino in the middle I think he performs better on the left. Difficult to leave Sturridge out as the front three combined well, but that would mean leaving a match winner on the bench in Coutinho. Can will be on the bench with the same midfield as last time and Lovren will come straight back in. However all that matters is what Klopp thinks, not what we think that’s why he gets the big bucks and we just criticize or agree, he could start Origi up front, don’t think so. One thing is for sure we have much better option off the bench than last year. Would love to take all 3 points and think we can.

          1. It would if we play the 4 1 2 3 we currently use.

4 2 1 3 wouldn’t need Couts to do a great deal of defensive work…which he sucks at.

But is quick with brain and feet to direct play once ball is won.

          2. I wanted Klopp to play his favorite 4 2 3 1 formation but it seems he has settled for 4 3 3 and that means the 3 mids will be Can when fit, Or Gini with Hendo and Lallana as the engine room, up front it will be very interesting and flexible and someone is going to miss out, not Mane and Firmino is a firm favorite so Sturridge and Coutinho will comete for one spot.

        1. I’ll try to explain what i mean.

It sounds good in my head…especially as my head is empty and the echo is amazing.

It’s a 4 2 1 3 where either Can or Hendo join in the the attack (while the other sits in dm ) and compliments Couts as a central playmaker dictating to 3 attackers.

This can work but needs great understanding and positional awareness between both Can & Hendo and independent of each other.

In essence a flat 4 with two arrows of 3 which is fluid enough to convert to a 2 1 4 3 with Couts in the middle of it all to utilize his ingenuity.

  4. Who decked Lovren? Yikes! Same midfield as last week pls.Even though Can looks really hungry in the pic.No need to experiment with a winning formula. I’d even consider starting Lucas again tbf.

      1. in all honesty I don’t think anyone can say any more, maybe we can all pick a squad of about 18 but the actual team Klopp picks would depend on formations and opposition, for example I think if David Luis plays Klopp might keep Sturridge in but drop him and revert back to the usual front three for big away matches if Terry plays ~ I know they say he’s out for ten days but you never know.
If you were looking at Klopp’s squad in 18 months I’d expect it to contain Karius, Ward, Matip, Gomez, Lovren, Can, Mane, Lallana and Firminho from the current squad. It wouldn’t surprise me if any of the others left ( I’m not including young players like Stewart, Ojo, Alexander Arnold, Woodburn and co in that of course ).

        1. Haha so no origi, clyne, grujic, wijnaldum, couthino, hendo and sturridge… Wow next summer is going to be a busy one then. 😛

          1. I think if Coutinho plays well he’ll go to Barca and if he isn’t playing well enough to get a transfer he could well be replaced if we can find a Mane type on the left, Grujic and Origi would be included with the younger players and as for the rest I think yes they could all be replaced, hopefully Klopp will develop them to play his way though and make too many signings unnecessary. For me we need a defensive LB like Hector, a playmaker like Dahoud, a wide left player and maybe a striker, I’m pleased to see we are still being linked with Lucas Alario, I think he is the nearest to Suarez out there that I’ve seen but if we don’t get him I think Woodburn could fill that role ~ of striker not replacement for Suarez !!

          2. So Klopp signed wijnaldum this summer and he is already looking for a replacement? Sorry mate I think your bit confused.

          3. Not really confused friend, I was listing players I expected to be in Klopp’s squad in 18 months time as he builds his team, it wasn’t definitive, just what I think will form the nucleus of it. Klopp has yet to sort out the midfield, if he gets Dahoud ( big if but he wants him ) and has Grujic and Can in there too I’m not sure where Wijnaldum will fit so, as I said, it wouldn’t surprise me if he wasn’t there, doesn’t mean Klopp is looking to replace him, it just means I wouldn’t be surprised if he wasn’t there thats all.

          4. Klopp likes to work with big squads when he is competing in Europe. Hopefully in 18 months we are in Europe, which means there would be more then enough space for win wijnaldum,in fact we can sign Dahoud and a defensive midfielder and still keep wijnaldum,I think Stewart and Lucas won’t be here for long

      2. I cant comment on my keeper as I havent seen Karius play in the PL
Clyne, Matip, Lovren, Moreno ( I went for Moreno purely he is left footed)
        Lallana, Can, Henderson
        Coutinho, Firmino, Mane
        or
        Clyne, Matip, Lovren, Moreno
Lallana, Coutinho, Henderson (Hendo only because he’ captain)
        Sturridge, Firmino, Mane

        1. Yeah a midfield of lallana, couthino and hendo won’t work IMO.
          Clyne,matip,Lovren,Moreno
          Henderson,can,couthino
          Mane,sturridge,firmino
This is the team I’m going for.

  5. Lovren will walk straight back into the starting lineup. Lucas did well, Lovren is better. Whether Can start is a more interesting discussion. After quite some games with Hendo – Wijnaldum – Lallana they seem to work together better by the game. Not sure if it’s wise to change that setup.

If they decide to do it it’s my best guess Wijnaldum will be the one dropping out.

    1. Agree. Lovren should take Lucas place, and the other trio should be intact. Watched the game twice as usual, one of the best games I’ve seen from Hendo. I’m not gonna mention that enormous chance for him to score, it was so Hendo, but like I said – I won’t mention it 🙂
Clyne was our least good player IMO, but shouldn’t and can’t be dropped, but he needs to find his form of last year soon.
The only change I would like to see is Karius in for Migs.

      1. Not too sure if that’s the best game to chuck him in.

Hendo’s chance, and I know we’re not mentioning it, came from the moment Stewart came on and Hendo pushed higher up. So most likely he won’t be in a situation where he’ll be in a situation to score.

In stead of Stewart we can bring on Can to steady the ship and then he can push on.

        1. Two good reasons to drop Migs:
          – there will be lots of aerial duels after corners and other set pieces
          – good skills on the ball with regards to quick and precise distribution

          1. I don’t see the need to put him under that amount of pressure, away at Chelsea, for your debut. Stick with Migs and start him against Derby.

      2. Agree about Hendo’s game. It is good to see him performing better in that hybrid holding/box-to-box role. I’d be tempted to let him bed in there while he is on a roll. I think I’d start with Can on the bench. No need to rush him back into the squad.

    2. Real dilemma for Klopp! Who gets dropped for Coutinho? Certainly not Mane and it would be a harsh one on Sturro after the shift he put in.

Gut says Sturridge is out and Firms is up front. Seems to be the go to for big teams away from home.

    3. I don’t think I’d mess with the front six, honestly. Sucks for Couts, but if it is working…

Chelsea could be a tougher nut to crack though, so you could bring on Couts later in the game to help unlock the defense if that is what is needed.
