Adam Lallana ruled out of Southampton clash after England injury
Adam Lallana ruled out of Southampton clash after England injury. The midfielder scored a penalty against Spain on Tuesday night.
Liverpool were dealt a blow on Wednesday night after Adam Lallana was ruled out of this weekend’s trip to Southampton.
The midfielder was substituted before the half-hour mark in England’s friendly international against Spain on Tuesday night, after scoring an early penalty.
The problem was with Lallana’s groin, which he initially injured in Liverpool’s victory of Swansea in October.
Lallana could not train for 12 days after that injury and missed England’s World Cup qualifiers but it is understood the damage he has sustained this time is not so serious and he should be able to start training at some point next week.
But his absence at St Mary’s will still be a significant blow for Jurgen Klopp, who regards Lallana as one of the most important members of his team and has been instrumental in them climbing to the top of the table.
Lallana was assessed by Liverpool’s medical staff on Wednesday, having returned to Merseyside in the early hours of Wednesday morning.
It is expected that his place will now be taken by Gini Wijnaldum.
