After a horrific week behind them, Liverpool went into Yorkshire hoping to get a win that would boost their hopes of finishing in the Top 4, come to the end of this season. David Wagner’s men were in a bad situation themselves with his team winless in the last 6 league games. Both teams, in desperate need for 3 pts was something that would this tie an important one.
The team news caught the eye with Jurgen Klopp opting to rest Virgil van Dijk, seemingly for the game against Spurs this Sunday. The skipper, Jordan Henderson made his first start in over a month slotting into the deep midfield role with Can and Milner being the other 2 midfielders. The front 3 remained the same with the Fab 3 starting while Lovren replaced Virgil. Joe Gomez came back in at RB and Andy Robertson got back onto his LB role for this tie.
The first half certainly started off nicely for Huddersfield with Depoitre getting a wonderful chance which forced a good save from Loris Karius. It was all Liverpool after that, boasting around 70% possession from then on. Huddersfield sat deep making it hard for Liverpool as usual. Liverpool had plenty of the ball and strung an awful lot of passes in the centre of the park.
The breakthrough came from an Emre Can screamer after he saw his bullet shot from outside the box go in with a slight deflection from a Huddersfield man. That goal in the 26th minute eased pressure off the Reds wh carried on the first half with more possession.
In stoppage time of the first half, Bobby gave us a 2-goal cushion after a brilliant finish, beating Lossl at his near post with perfection. The build-up to the goal was spectacular with Sadio Mane just pushing the ball to the path where Firmino made the run. Liverpool went into the half-time break with full control over the game.
The second half started again with Liverpool controlling the whole game with a massive amount of ball possession. The centre-back pairing of Joel Matip and Dejan Lovren were rarely pressured by the Huddersfield players and got the passing game going for us. It looked so easy though boring for Liverpool. Late on in the game, Emre Can won a penalty for the Reds, after Billing brought him down in the box.
Mo Salah set-up to take the penalty after getting a go-ahead from James Milner and he made no mistake whatsoever, scoring his 19th goal in the Premier League this season. The Egyptian has been the signing of the season in the Premier League. The referee Kevin Friend had a good game as well, with his decision-making being spot on.
Huddersfield barely had any chance in this game apart from that Depoitre shot and a late Tom Ince effort which went wide. We could’ve got more goals but Sadio Mane couldn’t find the back of the net twice after a couple of amazing long balls from the German, Can. Sadio looks a bit out of form which isn’t good news for the fans. The game finished 0-3 for the Reds and they now sit 4th in the table with 50 pts i.e. 5 ahead of Spurs who face Man Utd on Wednesday.
This win will act as a morale booster for the crunch game against Spurs this weekend as we look forward to it soon.
