News Roundup: Of Stats, Chances & Morientes!

Good day FOARites!!!

Welcome to the first day of the rest of your life! Not overly dramatic since in a couple hours time, we play Manchester City at Anfield in the QUARTER-fuckin-FINALS of the CHAMPIONS-fuckin-LEAGUE!

Assuredly I tell you, our Live Game Cafe and Anfield will be frothy and sudsy – down Joe! – with Primo Excitement and Orgasma!

But first…don’t read the stats! 🙁   Because apparently they make pretty poor reading.

– Liverpool have a 57.1% win ratio at Anfield, compared to 42.9% away from home.

– When playing at Anfield first, Liverpool have made it through to the next round 50% of the time.

– When playing at Anfield second, Liverpool have made it through to the next round 87.5% of the time.

– Only Benfica, in 2005-06, have knocked Liverpool out of the Champions League when the second leg has been played at Anfield.

– Three out of the four times Liverpool have been beaten over two legs in the Champions League knockout rounds they have played at home first.

Nervous yet? Don’t be…coz stats like this are meant to be broken.

Jordan Henderson and “decisive moments”!

Ol Capitano has spoken (and so has Lovren by the way! gulp!) He said:

‘Occasions like this are decided by who performs best over the two legs and who makes the most of the decisive moments,’ he explained. ‘The team that takes their chances will stand the best chance of reaching the semi-finals.’

He is not only Captain of Liverpool but Captain Obvious! Still, we need him and everyone on the pitch today to be at the top of their game, switched ON from Minute ONE to any Added Minutes.

I think Emre Can in the centre of the park will be missed but hey…we roll with it!

Morientes: Liverpool can beat City to progress

Man, I love this guy! Three time winner of the CL with Real Madrid, has chimed in to Yahoo Sport with this:

“I think Liverpool are one of the favourites to get to the semi-finals, or even reach the final,”

“Jürgen Klopp is building something step by step, and I think it’s bearing fruit. In the Premier League, they’re very close to securing qualification [for next season’s Champions League], which I think is their objective, and in the Champions League they have been perfect.

“They’re in a great moment and [in the first leg] against Porto, they showed they have players in really good form. There’s Firmino and Salah, who is scoring so many goals. They’re having a fantastic season and there’s no reason they can’t get to the final.”

As I said on the Preview podcast, we need to beat City and show that our way of doing things has chance to succeed in this world of moneybags and football cynics.

Of course you’ve already heard that Matip is out for the season. Not sure if anyone is nervous about that. Young Conor Masterson is expected to make the bench tonight. Let’s hope we don’t have to use him unless we’re already 5 nil up!

And we’ve given fresh fodder to FSG Outers now that we’ve topped the table for Premier League agent fee spending.

Of the present year’s tally, Liverpool account for around 12.5%, coming in with £26.8m, having made a couple of major signings in the form of Mohamed Salah from Roma and Virgil van Dijk from Southampton, who became the world’s most expensive defender when he arrived at Anfield for £75m.

I expect us to stay in and about the top of that dubious table next season too when we bring in fresh faces that’ll help us compete for the title proper.

That’s it! I’ll part with what Klopp said at the Presser yesterday.

Be brave, be confident – make people happy

…and don’t give us any heart attacks. Pretty please?
