Hosts Russia got off to a fantastic start as they thrashed Saudi Arabia 5-0. The two lowest ranked teams played in the opening game and it was the minnows who set the tone for the month-long festivities.
As the tournament started introducing the other teams, South American Powerhouse Uruguay were taken to the limit by Egypt, until a last-minute header struck a dagger in to the hearts of the Salah-less Pharaohs.
Nevertheless, performances by teams held in lower esteem were beginning to upset and interfere with the natural balance and hierarchies that are present in the football world.
Defensive resoluteness, impeccable organization and a never-say-die attitude are just some of the characteristics on display from the minnows at the World Cup,which has resulted in shock results.
The likes of Russia, Iceland, Iran, Switzerland, Mexico, Japan and Senegal have upset the odds and snatched unlikely results from the jaws of certainty and added a new dimension at this year’s World Cup.
Reigning champions Germany were perhaps the biggest shock as they lost to Mexico and are needing a win in their next game to ensure their participation in the latter stages.
As the second round is in full swing, fans will be watching with baited breath to see if any more upsets occur, and if familiar faces will book their return tickets to their home lands early and if new teams enter uncharted territory that is the knockout rounds.
The likes of Argentina, Germany, Colombia and many other big names have failed to live up to their big boy tags and will be looking to impress in the coming rounds to ensure progress and dispel any talk of being ejected prematurely.
The positive side that comes from winning the first game is massive, and provides a platform to seal progress with limited fuss.
Although Egypt, Morocco and Peru have been eliminated, there is a good chance that there will be a few surprises in the knockout stages, and the minnows, to an extent, will make their presence known.
