A Friday News Roundup

Even though the season hasn’t started yet, a lot of things are happening every day and sometimes it can be hard to keep up. But we’ll give it our best.

Klopp responds to Mourinho taunts

It was to be expected, after Mourinho’s most recent attempt at playing mind games, the media would try and get a response from the Liverpool manager. Well, they did, and he didn’t disappoint them.

Asked if the Manchester United manager was playing mind games, he replied:

“Yeah, for sure, a little bit but that’s okay.

But I heard as well that Jose found me funny and one of my biggest goals in life is to make Jose smile! It doesn’t happen too often and if it happens because of Liverpool – well done!

I said a few things [in the past]. I cannot really remember what I said but I know what I said about the Pogba transfer. We would never talk about Manchester United unless somebody asks me about it but I am polite enough to give an answer if somebody asks me. That’s not always the smartest thing to do, and I have absolutely no problem with what Jose Mourinho is saying. It is a free world and he can say whatever he wants.

If he is happy about our transfers even better, but we know that it does not mean you win automatically whatever.”

As for his apparent change of approach in the recent few transfer windows, here’s my two cents if anybody cares at all. Excuse the typos.

Besiktas in for Mignolet

Sky Sports claim Besiktas have expressed interest in signing Simon Mignolet.

You never know with Sky, they’ve been known to both hit and miss with their reports, but for Mignolet departure certainly makes sense. Liverpool signed Alisson Becker for a world-record fee and it’s pretty clear who will be the first choice between the sticks come the start of the season.

Loris Karius also expressed uncertainty over his future after the signing of Alisson, but it’s not very likely to make any difference for Mignolet. At the age of 30, it’s hard to imagine him wanting to be a backup option. He hinted at it quickly after Klopp decided to bench him permanently halfway through the last season.

Sky say the talks are ongoing and if that’s true, and Mignolet wants/accepts Besiktas as his next club, it’s hard to see any obstacles to a deal being agreed unless another club enters the fray.

The time is certainly right for a change of scenery for the Belgian.

Marković to Olympiacos?

Another thing our “friends” from Sky Sports are reporting is that Lazar Marković is a target for Greek side Olympiacos. But they’re apparently facing competition from Standard Liege, while Carl Markham of Press Association adds that there’s also interest from clubs in England.

If the time has come for Mignolet to leave Liverpool, the same can be safely said about Marković. Even though he’s been playing rather well this pre-season, the likes of Sheyi Ojo, Ryan Kent and Harry Wilson are unable to get game-time on the wings, and with the arrival of Xherdan Shaqiri… Well, the writing seems to be on the wall for Lazar.

Loris Karius (sore knee), Gini Wijnaldum (muscle) and Naby Keita (stiff neck) are missing the training session on Friday as the team prepares for the game against Manchester United on Saturday, as per the club’s official website.
