Twenty-year-old Nigerian Academy forward Taiwo Awoniyi, who recently signed a new five year long term contract with Liverpool, has gone on loan to Belgian club KAA Gent.
The club recently finished 4th in the domestic league. They won the league in the 2014-15 season for the first time in their 115-year history.
Having missed out on going on Liverpool’s preseason tour to America along with fellow striker, Danny Ings this is Awoniyi’s fourth loan stint.
Awoniyi joined Liverpool as a 17 year old in 2015 having won the FIFA U-17 World Cup with Nigeria two years previously as a 15 year old scoring five times in the tournament. The 6ft forward has since been loaned out to various clubs KAA Gent being the latest.
With the likes of 23 year old Divock Origi struggling to impress in preseason Liverpool games after returning from a loan stint at German club VfL Wolfsburg and 20 year old Dominic Solanke’s career seemly at an impasse since that incredible achievement of winning the 2017 FIFA World Cup where he was awarded the Golden Ball as player of the tournament.
One has to wonder if Taiwo Awoniyi is going to suffer the same fate? He is a bit of an unknown quantity and I’d never been aware of the player until the new contract was signed. Having initially signed in 2015 for £400,000 and immediately loaned out. He’s been loaned out ever since. With Mo Salah, Roberto Firmino, Sadio Mane and Daniel Sturridge even, being the main strike force it’s hard to see how even after a season long loan the player will eventually fit in. Well I wish him all the best and he goes to prove what a player he is the the Belgian league and will work his way into Klopp’s thinking for squad selection in the 2019-20 season.
Awoniyi spoke about his fellow African Liverpool teammates.
“Mane and Salah have really done well for the club and shown the world what Africa has got. Many African players have this talent – it’s just the opportunity sometimes.”
YNWA Awoniyi, keep believing the dream.
