With the news breaking today that Danny Ward is to be rewarded with a chance as No.1 I can happily tell you all that it is music to my ears.
Danny has waited patiently all of last season whilst watching the other 2 “superior” goalkeepers make howlers whilst he was sat in his training kit watching games. From what I have heard his attitude has been nothing but professional during this time.
I would also like to add that whenever I have seen him play he has always been everything we have wanted in a keeper. For example, against Tranmere he played the first half and had very little to do. But he was called upon twice very soon after each other and he did not disappoint at all, dealing with both situations brilliantly. The first making a stunning reaction save down to his right and from the following corner punched away the in swinging cross off the head of a Tranmere player.
I think that he will not let this chance go and he will prove that he has what it takes to cut it as a top flight goalkeeper. Now I am not saying he is going to fix all of our defensive issues, not a by a long shot. He is still vastly unexperienced and may take time to settle into the role as a premier league GK. However I honestly believe this to be an improvement on Karius and Mignolet.
So what will happen to Karius?
I think that an extended period of time on the bench would do wonders for Karius. He has made so many high profile errors that he needs to be taken out of the spotlight and given some time to get over it and move on, once he has done this he may well get back to his very best and show us all what he can do between the sticks. I just dont believe that this will happen any time soon.
What does Ward need to do to keep the shirt his own?
Honestly, I believe that he will be a solid stand in. He may not be the world class No.1 that LFC need but he would certainly fill the void to a good standard until one becomes available. He needs to command his area, have good distribution and most of all make as many saves as possible. Sounds obvious but with our goalkeeping record lately it is not always a given.
Once again though I would like to point out that I am behind Jurgen all the way and whatever he decides to go with is what I will cheer on.
