Liverpool have today learned their opponents in the group stage of the Champions League for the 2018/19 season at a ceremony in Monaco. Liverpool were in pot 3 due to PAOK failing to progress on Wednesday night despite taking the lead eventually succumbing to a 5-2 defeat on aggregate to Benfica.
Liverpool were drawn against Sevilla, Maribor and Spartak Moscow in the draw last year before meeting Porto, Manchester City and Roma on route to a showdown with Real Madrid in Kiev where the Spaniards triumphed 3-1 and Liverpool will be hoping to make the final in Madrid and go a step further than the last campaign. The opponents are :-
Pot 1 – Paris St Germain – Liverpool faced PSG in the Cup Winners Cup semi final in 1997, triumphing 2-0 at Anfield as the club failed to mount a comeback after a 3-0 defeat in France
Pot 2 – Napoli – Liverpool met Napoli in the Europa League group stage in 2010-2011, drawing 0-0 in Italy and triumphing 3-1 at Anfield with Steven Gerrard coming off the bench to score a hat trick in front of the new Liverpool owners as the Reds turned around a half time defecit. More recently Liverpool recorded a 5-0 win in Dublin against Napoli in pre season.
Pot 4 – Red Star Belgrade – Liverpool were beaten home and away 2-1 in the 1973 European Cup 2nd round by Red Star Belgrade who won the competition in 1991 with Chris Lawler scoring both of the Liverpool goals during the tie.
The fixtures will be played on the following weeks and UEFA will confirm the dates for these ties within 2 hours of the draw conclusion which will then cause a domino effect with flight companies and hotel chains scrambling to quickly increase their prices for the travelling supporters.
