The English Summer transfer window is now closed due to clubs voting on changing the transfer window last year, so all transfers are completed before the new Premier League season starts. The European transfer window for France, Germany and Spain is August 31st. In Italy it’s August 17th.
However it hasn’t stopped speculation on the future of a number of Liverpool fringe players who may yet still leave the club either on loan or be sold.
The Edwards Touch
Michael Edwards had hoped to help the club offload a number of players deemed surplus to requirements by recouping approximately £100 million. This target won’t be reached now however. The potential £20 million sale of Danny Ings to Crystal Palace never materialized and Ings is now on loan to Southampton. Eyebrows were raised at the £27 million valuation slapped on Divock Origi at 23 he’s never managed to convince the manager he’s worth keeping. Five games and zero goals scored during preseason for Liverpool. Edwards may well be trying to sell Ice to the Eskimos on this particular deal.
Other potential dealings include Simon Mignolet and Sheyi Ojo.
Ragnar Klavan may yet leave, as much as people seemly don’t rate Klavan he’s been a solid squad player and reliable. If he goes he’ll be appreciated for his professionalism. Obviously at 32 years of age the club won’t stand in his way in his desire to play regular football somewhere else.
With reserve keeper Danny Ward sold to Leicester City for the decent sum of £12.5 million it was a great bit of business by Michael Edwards. Yet another keeper Simon Mignolet might also leave the club with Serie A runners up Napoli showing interest in the player.
Mignolet is at an important crossroad in his career. He should go and join Ancolitti’s Napoli in my opinion particularly as they’ve got Champions League football to offer. I cannot think of a more beautiful region to live in. Fresh start, fans adoration, great climate & culture. It’s a win win situation.
It can’t be much fun being the third choice keeper especially with two academy goalkeepers also catching the eye in preseason games, Caoimhin Kelleher and Kamil Grabara.
Although fans may wonder if Michael Edwards is trying too hard to get too much for players who’ve not shown the best of their ability. Let’s remember this is the guy that sold Jordan Ibe to Bournemouth for £15 million having only ever scored one, yes one solitary goal in his Liverpool career. £8 million was paid by Hull City for another instantly forgotten player, Kevin Stewart who played an entire…eighteen minutes of Premier League football for the club. The £26 million Crystal Palace paid for Sakho was also an inspired deal.
The Future Generation
For the other players on loan, Ben Woodburn is with Sheffield United and two players are in loan to Steven Gerard’s Glasgow Rangers, Ryan Kent and Ovie Ejaria. These three players still have a future with Liverpool in my opinion especially also Harry Wilson on loan to Derby a player I’ve long been an admirer of who did his chances of being in the squad no harm in this performances in preseason. Klopp has other plans and the future does look better if these players continue to grow under their respective coaches for the upcoming season.
