Preview: Crystal Palace vs Liverpool
Following victory against West Ham, Liverpool will be hoping to build upon their successful start to the season.
Their foe will yet be another London club, with Crystal Palace being the opposition this time round. Standing in the opposition dugout will be a familiar face, with ex-manager Roy Hodgson managing the Eagles. With Selhurst Park proving to be a challenging ground for Reds in recent years, here are the things to note in the buildup to Monday’s game.
Gomez To Keep His Place
Having started last Saturday’s game against the Hammers, Gomez looks set to stay at the heart of defence. This is due in part to the uncertainty surrounding Liverpool’s other defenders. Matip, though having returned to full training, is to be assessed before the game. Lovren remains sidelined with a pelvis issue, while Klavan is set to seal his move to Italian side Cagliari.
Having started the season with a clean sheet, Gomez will be hoping he could yet play a crucial role in shutting out Crystal Palace. Another good display will certainly go a long way in cementing his place in the starting XI.
Wan-Bissaka’s Biggest Test Yet
A product of Crystal Palace’s academy, Wan-Bissaka made an impressive start to the season. Against newboys Fulham, he put in a good shift to secure a clean sheet. An assist for Zaha was the icing on the cake for the youngster, who rightly earned plaudits after the game.
However, can he repeat the trick against Liverpool?
Come Monday, Wan-Bissaka will be facing the toughest challenge yet in his promising career thus far. Liverpool will offer a much more threatening opposition than what Fulham could offer. Being a right-back, his direct opponent would be Mane. Having himself made an explosive start by banging in 2 goals against West Ham, Wan-Bissaka will be at his best to stand a chance against Mane. The battle between the two will be an intriguing one, and whoever comes out tops will surely have a big impact on the final result.
Zaha To Represent The Eagles Biggest Threat
Having just been rewarded with a new £13,000 per week contract, Zaha will be eager to repay his employers with a good performance. His importance to the club is telling, with Crystal Palace failing to net a single point in the Ivorian’s 10 game absence last season. Stop him and Liverpool will nullify Crystal Palace’s biggest threat.
That said, it won’t be an easy task. Zaha, who just need one more goal to become Crystal Palace’s all-time highest PL goalscorer, is a top player. Liverpool’s defenders will have to be at their best to ensure Crystal Palace’s route to the goal is blocked. That’ll certainly go a long way in securing all 3 points at Selhurst Park.
