Different Feels

The last time Liverpool faced Cardiff at Anfield was in December 2013: a 3-1 win, supervised by Luis Suarez’s mastery, sent Liverpool to the top of the table just in time for Christmas.

Historically, The team that sits top on Christmas goes on to win the league come May, but we all know what happened…

The ride that was experienced during that mesmerizing campaign was incredible, and the unwanted result that occurred at the end of the season gave rise to many ‘what ifs’.

The first two full campaigns under Jurgen Klopp were like a rollercoaster ride, after which many palpitations and broken windows were yielded due to the performances, results, and heartbreaking moments.

This season, however, there is a different feeling. Albeit only 10 rounds of league action have passed, there is a cool, calm atmosphere within the team that wears the Liverbird. The defence is assured, the midfield has undergone tuning and the front three are there usual, potent selves.

The disappointment of the previous two seasons may have been painful, but one can’t help and wonder whether they were predetermined conditions for success; that the suffering that had to be endured in the last 24 months were necessary to build and strengthen their resolve and character…

Teams are shutting up shop and defending for their lives, hoping to negate the attacking threat but are failing admirably; in seasons past this would hamper the Reds and lead to dropped points.

As Cardiff City descended onto Anfield, there was the reality that this would be a tough game but patience would be required, and chances would have to be taken.

The final score, 4-1, a good reflection of the game, also sent Liverpool to the top of the Premier League, until Monday recently as Manchester City defeated Tottenham to reclaim top spot due to their superior goal difference.

Nearly five years on from the only other league encounter with the Welsh Side, the assertiveness within Liverpool’s play and attitude can only be a good thing and they look to be in a better position to stay and challenge at the top.
