Gomez Set for New Contract

Liverpool have started negotiations over a new deal for Joe Gomez, according to Paul Joyce of The Times.

The 21-year-old’s progress since joining from Charlton Athletic has been incredible given his injury woes. He started out at Liverpool under Brendan Rodgers as an emergency option at left-back due to a lack of consistency from Alberto Moreno, and he suffered an anterior cruciate ligament injury just as Jurgen Klopp arrived.

He spent most of last season alternating with Trent Alexander-Arnold at right-back, before an injury of Dejan Lovren at the start of the current campaign finally gave him a proper chance to shine at the heart of defence next to Virgil van Dijk. He has been putting in quality performances with consistency, and Lovren has now fallen behind him in the pecking order.

The club have, therefore, decided to reward his progress with a new, improved deal, even though the one he signed last year runs until the summer of 2022.
