Advent Calendar 13: Danny Murphy
After rising to prominence at Crewe Alexandra, making his full debut for the club at the ripe age of 16. Once he had helped Crewe make their return to the second division of English football (League One), he had garnered the attention of many top English sides. His boyhood club came calling, and Murphy snapped up the chance to join the mighty Reds in the summer of 1997 for a few of £1.5m.
His first season for the Reds, he only managed to make one appearance for the side. In his second season, he returned to Crewe on loan and successfully helped them avoid relegation. Upon returning from Loan, he seemed poised to be sold, but he defied expectations and became a stalwart for years to come.
During the 2001 season, Murphy managed to be a part of one of the more unique cup trebles ever won, helping the Reds clinch the League Cup, FA Cup, and UEFA Cup. The peak of Murphy’s time in red has to be the fact that he was named Supporters player of the year in the 2002-2003 season, bagging 12 goals and helping the Reds to their second League Cup trophy in 3 seasons.
He was also very well known for snatching the winner against bitter rivals, Manchester United. He scored the deciding goal 3 times in 4 seasons against the worst club in the world, all in 1-0 victories. Murphy was sold to Charlton Athletic in the summer of 2004, but he will always be a legend in many fans eyes.
