Champions League Opponents Confirmed

Liverpool have been drawn to face Bayern Munich in the Champions League round of 16. Liverpool last faced Bayern competitively in 2001 beating the Germans 3-2 in the European Super Cup. The two sides faced each other in the 1981 European Cup Semi Final with Liverpool progressing after a 0-0 draw at Anfield and a 1-1 draw in the return leg as Liverpool went on to win their 3rd European Cup.

The Reds will host the German club at Anfield in the first leg on Tuesday February 19, before visiting the Allianz Arena for the second leg on Wednesday March 13 with both matches scheduled to kick-off at 8pm GMT

Liverpool will hope for a repeat of their first leg result from last season where they beat Porto 5-0 before a 0-0 draw in the return fixture. Having reached the final in Kiev, Liverpool will hope that this is the next step on another journey to the Final which will be held in Madrid on June 1st 2019 at the Wanda Metropolitano which is the home of Atletico Madrid, who vacated the Vicente Calderon in 2017.

Liverpool are unbeaten in their last eight meetings against German clubs (W6 D2), beating Hoffenheim 2-1 away and 4-2 at home in last season’s play-offs. The Reds have never lost to Bundesliga visitors at Anfield (W12 D3)

During the draw, it was confirmed the VAR will be utilsed from this stage of the competition onwards following a number of tests. The draw was completed by France Women’s international Laura Georges and former Liverpool winger Luis Garcia.
