Gomez Signs New Deal

Joe Gomez has signed a new contract with Liverpool, the club have confirmed.

Having moved to Liverpool from Charlton Athletic in 2015, The 21-year-old has now committed his future to the club for further six years.

Primarily a centre-back, Gomez initially broke into the first team at left-back, as Brendan Rodgers, manager at the time, decided he needed a player more defensively responsible in that position than Alberto Moreno.

However, it wasn’t long before he suffered a season-ending ACL injury which, complemented by minor subsequent niggles, halted his progress for a long time.

In the meantime, Jurgen Klopp replaced Rodgers at the helm and Gomez found himself alternating with Trent Alexander-Arnold at right back all through last season, and only got a proper chance in his native position at the start of this campaign. He has been impressive in the heart of defence next to Virgil van Dijk.

Unfortunately, he is once again absent from the team, this time due to a fracture in the lower left leg suffered against Burnley on Wednesday and isn’t expected back in less than five weeks from now. He has, however, promised the fans to come back stronger than ever.
