LFC Advent Calendar 2 – Andrea Dossena
In the summer transfer window of 2008, Rafa Benitez was in the market for a left-back. In the end, he found his man in Andrea Dossena who joined the Reds from Udinese. Rafa splashed out £8 million to secure the his services at Anfield. He was given the No. 2 shirt when he arrived, and he also played as a left winger in his time at the club.
The signing of the Italian was a surprise amongst Liverpool fans, as Rafa already had 2 left backs at his disposal at the club, in Fabio Aurelio and Emiliano Insua. Due to the pair of them being at the club, Dossena saw his game-time limited and he only went onto make 31 appearances in total. However, this may have also been down to some of his calamitous defending.
He may not have had the greatest influence in his time at Liverpool, sometimes being more of a hindrance than help, but for four days in March 2009 he was a hero on the Kop. In the Champions League in 2009, Liverpool found themselves 3-0 up after goals from Torres and Gerrard (2). With the score being 4-0 on aggregate, Dossena came onto the pitch as a sub. After being on the pitch for 5 minutes, he latched his head onto a Mascherano cross and nodded the ball past the Madrid keeper to put game to bed, and help Liverpool sail into the next round. Just 4 days later, Liverpool faced Manchester United at Old Trafford. He again came on as a substitute in the 67th minute, with the scores 2-1, as a left winger. Aurelio scored a free kick to make it 3-1. Dossena then put the icing on the cake with a lovely lob over Edwin Van Der Sar to make it 4-1.
These two goals would be his only strikes for Liverpool, but they were big goals in big games. In January 2010, Dossena left Liverpool after only 18 months to go back to his homeland. He signed for Napoli for a fee of £3 million, resulting in a £5 million loss for Liverpool. In his time at Napoli he went on to win the 2011/12 Coppa Italia, his only career honour.
