LFC LADIES: Too Little too late as Reds lose to Everton

Just like in the EPL, it was a Merseyside derby for Liverpool ladies in the FASWL on Sunday, December 2nd, 2018.

However, it was the home side that went away with all 3 points with goals from Inessa Kaagman and Simone Magill. Jess Clarke pulled one back for the reds in the 12th minute, but it was not enough to rustle the Toffee’s feathers.

The blues announced Willie Kirk as their new manager in midweek. This was Everton’s first win of the FASWL 2018/19 season. The Toffees started the game with real purpose and Kaagman’s spectacular strike handed Kirk’s side the lead after just five minutes.

The Dutch international collected a pass from Hannah Cain 25 yards from goal, and chipped an effort over Anke Preuss into the top corner.

Liverpool’s response was immediate, as Clarke netted from close range on 12 minutes after Laura Coombs’ strike was parried into her path.

Kaagman was inches away from re-establishing Everton’s lead on 33 minutes, but Preuss bravely denied her at the far post following a flowing attack from the hosts.

The Blues did find a second goal on 41 minutes, with another brilliant long-range effort as Magill arrowed home a strike from 20 yards.

Liverpool had the better chances at the start of the second period, with Courtney Sweetman-Kirk going close with an overhead kick against her former side on 50 minutes.

The hosts were happy to play on counter attack in the second half, and Kaagman drew a reaction save from Preuss on 63 minutes from a curling effort.

Liverpool almost snatched a draw in the closing moments, with skipper Sophie Bradley-Auckland heading wide on 88 minutes, before substitute Leandra Little headed against the post a minute later.
