Manchester City vs Liverpool – Player Ratings
So let’s get this over with, shall we?
Alisson – Made a couple of good saves but was iffy with his distribution and kept insisting on giving it to Lovren. 7
Trent Arnold – Looked complacent and a bit tired. Sane had him on toast for much of the game. His superb ball into Robbo for the goal gives him an extra point. 5
Lovren – Terrible. At fault for first goal in somehow not seeing the bright blonde barnet of Aguero behind him, and played Sterling onside lazily for the second. Also apparently wanted to personally gift City a third goal. -27
Virgil – Tried his best but can’t be expected to defend for the entire team. Generally composed and defended well. 7
Robertson – Played alright. Got up and down the wing well enough and dealt well with Sterling for the most part. Nice assist. 7
Wijnaldum – At fault for the first goal by allowing the cross too easily and not making enough effort to get a block in. Wasn’t his usual tenacious self. 5
Henderson – Huffed and puffed but was the central figure in an ineffective midfield. Didn’t deal well enough with the press. Not the driving, influential captains performance we needed. 6
Milner – Looked knackered. Well off the pace and was replaced by Fabinho early in the second half. 4
Fabinho – Was pretty good. Wanted to get forward and showed good energy, probably should have started. 6
Mane – Unlucky not to score but went missing far too often. Perhaps a lack of service but either way, he wasn’t good. 5
Firmino – Positioned himself well for the goal and was the best of the front three. Not as effective dropping deep as we would have hoped but he wasn’t terrible. Good energy and effort. 6
Salah – Ran the lines well but, like Mane, suffered from a lack of service. Wasn’t able to stamp his mark on the game. 5
Subs – who cares?
City looked and played like the team trying to make up a deficit. They showed greater desire, much greater intensity and were clinical in their finishing. It was a bloody tough game and Liverpool did well to keep within touching distance.
The Liverpool midfield were especially vacant, and you will not beat Man City if that is the case.
On to the next one.
