Do We Strengthen or Promote Youth?
The problem with strengthening all the times is, it pushes the youth further away from the first team, but in today’s game you have to buy or you’ll drop away from the elite teams. Manchester City can spend a billion pounds in less than a decade. So that’s what you have to deal with.
It’s inevitable that there’s going to be a clear out in the summer. So a new versatile striker is essential, with Daniel Sturridge and Divock Origi likely to leave in the summer. It leaves us with only two strikers, Roberto Firmino and Rhian Brewster (Only back from long-term injury), so who’s our options? Two players who we should be after are, Timo Werner and Luka Jovic, both players ply their trade in the Bundesliga.
My choice would be Timo Werner, as he’d suit our style best. RB Leipzig play a similar style to Liverpool, and that would stand him in good stead. Another plus is he played with Naby Keita for two season’s. This transfer is a no-brainer, as he’s not signed a new deal and his club will want to cash in on him.
I can see Adam Lallana moving in the summer, but I don’t think we’ll buy a replacement. Harry Wilson should get an opportunity to prove himself after impressing in the Championship with Derby, and we’ll hopefully have Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain back to full fitness, we also have Marko Grujic to come back from loan after having an amazing season at Hertha in Germany, that will leave us with Fabinho, Henderson, Wijnaldum, Grujic, Keita, Milner, Ox and Wilson vying for three places. So I can’t see money been spent their.
This is an area were we need to strengthen, Moreno is on his way out, so a left-back is needed to compete with Andy Robertson. Another problem is cover at right-back and centre-back, Nathaniel Clyne, doesn’t seem to be part of Jürgen Klopps plans, and we have injury prone centre-backs. I can see us sign a versatile centre-back, who can cover left and right-back. One who comes to mind is, Benjamin Pavard, he’s versatile and can cover all defensive positions. Matthijs de Ligt is a another player we should be after. He’s one of the most sought after centre-backs in Europe. It’s a bit to early to promote Ki-Jana Hoever, a loan spell would stand to his development , and I’m not too sure Conor Masterson could make the step-up.
