Liverpool’s Title Odds Tighten Sharply After Chelsea Win
The most remarkable thing about the Premier League title odds in the last several weeks is that they haven’t really shifted at all. Both Liverpool and City have been flawless in the early spring, and it’s caused a certain rigidity in the betting markets.
While Jurgen Klopp and the team will have been acutely focused on their own performances, they will have been well aware that City were still favoured by bookmakers to win the title. That still remains the case 24 hours after Liverpool’s comfortable victory over Chelsea, but the odds have tightened considerably – in Liverpool’s favour.
For weeks, Liverpool had been given a price ranging from around 13/8 – 15/8 (across a wide selection of bookmakers). City, meanwhile, had been priced up at something around 1/2-4/7. Betfair and Paddy Power have now put Liverpool down as an even money chance, while they mark up City at 8/11.
Race Has Almost Become a Coin Toss
The vast majority of bookies – Bet365, Ladbrokes, William Hill, Betway, Betfred – have Liverpool down at 11/10. The best odds (in terms of returns) we can find for Liverpool after scouring dozens of bookies is the 6/5 from BetVictor. All of those brands are listed at https://www.freebets.co.uk/ if you’d like a free shot or want to hedge your bets with the use of some bookies’ promos.
The important thing for those studying this race is that City’s odds have really shifted too. Sky Bet, for example, push City close to even money territory at 4/5, whereas the majority go 8/11. Incidentally, the race is even tighter on betting exchanges, with City priced up at 5/6 on some.
Obviously, it won’t mean much to some fans that the bookies have changed their tune, but it does underscore an indisputable point. Namely, that this race is getting harder to call with just a handful of games to go. Most readers of this site will know the fixtures of both teams off by heart by now, and they’ll be hoping that City’s tougher fixture list will see them come undone.
Golden Boot Race Also Neck and Neck
Incidentally, there is also an incredibly tight race for Premier League top goal scorer, one that the bookmakers are also finding difficult to call. Sergio Aguero and Mo Salah are both locked on 19 goals each, with bookies split as to who is favourite. William Hill, for example go 6/4 on Salah and 13/8 on Aguero, whereas Sky Bet have the reverse, 6/4 for the Argentine and 13/8 for Salah. Betfred have the best odds in this market, citing 7/4 for Salah and 2/1 for the City talisman.
Obviously, there is a slender advantage for Aguero as City have an extra game to play, but it is still an incredibly tough call. However, if you want to know where the value is for this market, look no further than Sadio Mané. Fans are united in agreement that Mané has been incredible in 2019, integral to the teams Champions League hopes and title push. On 18 goals, he is within striking distance of the other pair, but is given a much bigger price of 6/1 with Betfred.
It will be fascinating to see how all of this plays out over the coming weeks. Despite the fact they are calling it one of the most exciting title races in an age, it has been rather serene as neither team has slipped up. The fixtures are piling up, however, and we could see some shocks, which will hopefully push the momentum irreversibly in Liverpool’s favour.
