Liverpool Won’t Sign De Ligt
Liverpool will not be signing Matthijs de Ligt this summer, according to James Pearce of Liverpool Echo.
Various reports, mostly originating from Spain, have claimed that the Reds are prepared to go toe to toe with Barcelona to sign the in-demand 19-year-old defender, but Pearce reveals that that’s simply not the case.
There is no denying that de Ligt is a fantastic player and an incredible prospect, given his age, and his heroics in Ajax’s amazing run to the Champions League semifinal have reportedly attracted the interests of a number of top European sides. He has been linked with Barcelona most heavily, and his name has been a daily feature in the Spanish press in recent months.
There were reports that the Catalans were afraid that the Reds would swoop in and try to use de Ligt’s connection with his international defensive partner Virgil van Dijk to hijack their move, but it seems there is no truth in such claims. Manager Jurgen Klopp is happy with the options currently at his disposal, with Joel Matip, Dejan Lovren and Joe Gomez all playing very well alongside van Dijk this season, and the club have no intention of repeating the feat which saw van Dijk arrive to Anfield for £75 million.
