Mane Plays Down Real Madrid Links
Sadio Mane has moved to quash the rumours linking him to Real Madrid.
Spanish media outlets have always been quick to invent stories about top players from other leagues either being targeted by Real Madrid and/or Barcelona, or wanting to join one of them in a “dream move”. To be fair, the behaviours of Luis Suarez and Philippe Coutinho ahead of their transfers to Barcelona gave them quite enough ammunition to last a long time when Liverpool are concerned, and they’re not shying away from using it.
All through 2017/18 they were linking Mohamed Salah with a switch to the Santiago Bernabeu, but the incident deliberately caused by Sergio Ramos in last year’s Champions League final completely stamped that story out.
Wasting no time, they immediately turned their attention to Sadio Mane. The departure of Cristiano Ronaldo from Real to Juventus hurt the 13-time European champions to an extent they could scarcely have imagined when they agreed to the deal. With the likes of Gareth Bale, Karim Benzema, Lucas Vazquez, Marco Asensio, and others, failing to make up for the lack of the Portuguese superstar, it’s mostly been Eden Hazard and Mane as the Spanish press favourites to step into the breach.
But while the Chelsea winger still seems likely to actually make the switch, Mane’s thoughts are only about Liverpool. As relayed by Paul Joyce of The Times, the Senegalese said he was flattered by the interest of big clubs, but he’s quite happy being a part of a team that “beats big clubs”.
Joyce believes this is a clear indication that Mane has no intention of leaving Anfield any time soon, and that he is ready to take the next step – with Liverpool.
