Injured Keita Leaves AFCON and Returns to Liverpool
Naby Keita has left his national team who are competing in the African Cup of Nations at the moment, and has returned to Liverpool for injury treatment, according to BBC.
The Guinean suffered a heavy groin injury at the end of the season. His involvement in the tournament was in doubt and he arrived there lacking proper levels of match fitness.
Keita played the final 30 minutes of Guinea’s opening 2-2 draw against Madagascar. He started the next game (a defeat to Nigeria) and was subbed off shortly after 70 minutes had gone, but played no part in their subsequent victory over Burundi.
After that game, however, he flew from Cairo to England for medical consultations, as revealed by the Guinea press officer, having suffered “a lot of heavy challenges” in the Nigeria clash. He made the trip at the request of Liverpool’s medical team, who advised him to come back for two days. At Guinea, they’re hopeful of having him back by Wednesday and playing in a potential round-of-16 match, but they couldn’t confirm that it will be so.
