Liverpool facing expulsion from Carabao Cup

As reported exclusively by James Pearce of The Athletic, Liverpool are facing a possible expulsion from the Carabo Cup for fielding an ineligible player in the 2-0 win over MK Dons on Wednesday.

EFL have launched an investigation as it appears that one of the players involved in the game possibly hasn’t satisfied the registration criteria for taking part in games of this particular competition.

Manager Jurgen Klopp made 11 changes to the team that beat Chelsea the previous weekend, giving a chance to several youngsters alongside a spine of experienced squad players. Harvey Elliott, Rhian Brewster, Curtis Jones, Ki-Jana Hoever and Caoimhin Kelleher all started together with James Milner, Dejan Lovren, Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain, Adam Lallana, Naby Keita and Joe Gomez, while Pedro Chirivella, Herbie Kane and Sepp van den Berg made appearances off the bench.

A Liverpool spokesperson said:

“The club are aware of a potential administrative issue pertaining to one of our players.

“We are working with the relevant authorities in order to establish the facts of the matter and will be making no further comment until this process is complete.”

If proven guilty, the EFL will decide whether to issue a fine or expel Liverpool from the competition.

The name of the player in question hasn’t been revealed.

A similar thing happened to Sunderland in 2014 when they fielded striker Ji Dong-Won, and should the investigation prove the offence, Liverpool will point to the fact that on the occasion, Sunderland were only fined.
